The Importance of Goal Setting: Why Goal Setting is Required for the Life You Want

It’s very easy to get caught up in wishing or wanting for things rather than taking the action steps necessary to get it. If you are ready to actually go after the things you say that you want, this post is for you. It is all about the reasons why goal setting is important and why it is a requirement for you to live the life that you want.

1. Changes your perspective: When thinking about our desires, we often don’t take into account what we have to do in order to get them. Usually we are focused on how nice it would be to have something or how we would feel once we got it. When you have properly set goals, they put things into perspective for you.

You go from thinking that things are out of your reach, to strategizing your next move to get the outcomes you want.

This new perspective can be the motivation you need to take the next step. Going after your goals is a process, and it requires a different way of thinking than just wishing you had something. Once you have a written your goal down, you will be much more likely to achieve it and actually create the result.

    2. Establishes an action plan: Setting goals allows you to develop a strategic action plan. This means that you will be able to plan and execute on exactly what you need to do in order to create your desired result.

A well formulated goal quantifies not only what you want, but the action steps you will need to take to get there.

This means that you will have actual numbers and metrics associated with the desire. This is very different from just wanting something. With your metrics defined, you will be able to track your action steps and evaluate whether or not you are making progress. Being able to track your efforts and progress is critical to your ability to create the life you desire.

    3. Creates a sense of urgency: If you have properly set your goals, they will have a date by which you intend to accomplish them.

The act of setting a date, creates urgency or the feeling that something must be done now.

Often we wait or waste time that we could be investing into effort towards what we want. It is easy to feel that we have all the time in the world, or to procrastinate because we do not see the importance of doing something now. Creating a goal and setting a deadline turns your wants into urgent matters that need to be remembered and addressed daily. This is also a function of your action plan. It allows you to see what can be done today to have the life that you want later.

    4. Pushes you out of your comfort zone: Setting goals makes you uncomfortable. It helps you establish an expectation of yourself. In addition to you feeling like your desires are an urgent matter, you will also be pushed out of your comfort zone by goals.

Seeing your goals written will help you understand what is required in order to have what you want. This allows you to establish a willingness to do what makes you uncomfortable.

Without a goal set, you will likely continue to do things the same way you’ve been doing them. We’ve heard the phrase, “What got you here, won’t get you there.” Having the courage to set your goals is the first step to getting the courage to go after them.

    5. Gives you the opportunity to create the life that you want: Setting goals allows you to create the systems, processes, mindset, and practices to go after the life you want. When you do not set goals, you stay stuck and in a state of wanting because you have not established an aim or objective for yourself.

Setting goals creates the opportunity for you to live the life you want, as it enables you to set your priorities according to what you are willing to do to obtain your desires.

Hopefully this post helps you see how vital setting goals is to your ability to create the life that you want. Remember, you are much more likely to get the things you are desiring when you set measurable, actionable goals in order to attain them. Having the courage to step out of your comfort zone and become an action taker starts with setting the goal.

To creating the life you want,
