Why Time Management Matters: The Real Reasons You Want to be Good at Time Management

The idea of effective time management can seem overwhelming or exhausting. At times, it comes off as just some prerequisite for being a good worker. If managing your time feels stressful or like it’s just something you have to do for your job, I want to challenge you to think about things differently in this post. Time management is really about effective allocation of your most valuable resource, your time. Let’s go over why time management is so important and the real reasons you want to be productive with your time.

The real reasons why time management and productivity matter

Spending your time in ways that fuel you: Reclaiming your time is not just about fixating on hyper productivity. We sometimes associate being productive with our sense of self-worth or personal value. This leads to spending a lot of time just trying to do things that feel important. Being really productive is not the only thing that matters. Neither is being really productive at work nor in your career in particular. Reclaiming your time through effective time management actually serves the purpose of helping you spend your time in ways that fuel you rather than drain you. It is aimed at helping you get the most out of your time so you can spend more of it enjoying what you are doing.

Enjoying the gift of life: Life is a gift and however you like to enjoy it, you want to be spending your time doing those things. Rather than thinking of time management as just a way that you can get more done for your job, think about it as a way to get things done for you as well. Maybe you want to spend more time in prayer. You can do this if you are effectively managing your time. Maybe you want to make time for workouts or meal planning at the start of the week. These are things that will allow you to get the most out of life because they fuel and recharge you. Taking time to do the things that allow you to really enjoy life is what is important, not just being productive for productivity’s sake.

Contribution to the lives of others: It is possible that you spend less time giving to others or nurturing your relationships because you always feel like you don’t have the time. Effective time management is really about prioritizing the things that matter most, and part of that is relationships and the people you care for. Time management allows you to make time for the people you love without the guilt of looming tasks you may be procrastinating on.

Redefining your life through time management: Effective time management gives you the opportunity to redefine your life. This really just means that if there is anything about how you spend your time that you do not like, you can change that with time management. It also means choosing to spend your time building a life that you are proud to leave behind when you are gone.

How to build the life you want through effective time management

Buy back your time: If you are working a traditional job, you are likely trading your hours for dollars. This limits what you can do with your time and your income. To build the life you want, you may want to focus on developing multiple streams of income so you can afford to spend more time doing the things you enjoy.

Prioritize self-care: Wellness, mental health and self-care are at the forefront of how you will build the life that you want. What is success without good health? Investing time into taking care of yourself is what will fuel you to be able to move forward with any goal or project you have across multiple areas of life.

Make time for personal interests: You will want to make time to do the things you enjoy. What is the point of being productive or managing your time if you always have to spend it doing things that weigh you down? Making time for your personal interests is how you will put time management to work, building the life you actually want to be living.

Allocate time to the things that matter most: Time management helps you build the life you want by giving you the opportunity to focus on the things, people and relationships that matter most. Remember, there is a reason you are working toward your goals, and it may not be just about having nice stuff.

Effective time management and productivity goes deeper than just getting things done. It really is about building the life you want, enjoying how you spend your time, and leaving behind a life you are proud to say you’ve lived. Thanks for reading, and good luck on your productivity journey!
